Reflecting

December 12, 2016

Every night, if I'm not crazy tired, I fill out my question of the day in my five year Q&A book. Last week one of the questions was "Where do you see yourself in a year?" which naturally got me thinking because 2016 is coming to a close. The reason I love this Q&A book is for these exact questions. You fill out your answer every day for five years so you get to see how your responses vary from year to year. When you get these prediction questions it's fun to see where you were right or wrong and how things have changed.

Last year I answered the "Where do you see yourself in a year?" question with the following: with more friends, in a better apartment and engaged. I can check off two out of the three hopes from last year and I thought it'd be interesting to expand and reflect on those things here.

More friends: unfortunately I can't really check this one off. I'll be honest, I haven't done as much as I should to try and make more friends, but putting yourself out there is so scary! I'm definitely an introvert so trying to make new friends gives me anxiety. I have a good friend here who I went to college with, but other than that my social life is wanting. I think I feel the same way about making friends as a lot of people do about dating: I'd rather meet people naturally in real life. I looked into Meetup and there was an app for making friends I read about, and even joined, but I ended up chickening out and never going to anything. The worst part is that I'm used to not having many friends now and have become complacent. I write about this here because I'm hoping that it lights a fire under my ass to make more of an effort. I would love to hear any tips you have though for making new friends as an adult because I'm floundering!

A better apartment: I think that we can check this one off, but there have been a few issues as of late. It's definitely an upgrade in the sense that we have more space, we're on the top floor (which is actually a toss-up now because we have the dog) and the natural light is exponentially better. However, our mail box has been broken into twice in the last couple of months, which is pretty unsettling. The whole mail thing happened when I was trying to get a California license and so it got delayed by about three months which was very frustrating. Our lease is up in February and we're not really sure what we want to do when that happens. It's all up in the air!

Engaged: so happy to say that this happened :) wedding planning is going well so far, but it's a little slow for my liking. I honestly would have been fine with a six month engagement because you don't have too much time to second guess anything and it's just go-go-go. Unfortunately you can't really plan a wedding in six months anymore and get the venue or dress or photographer that you really wanted. I'm sure I'll be wishing for these days of little stress when we're in the throes of seating arrangements and addressing envelopes.

I don't want to share how I answered the question this year (don't want to jinx anything!) but I have a feeling that 2017 is going to be better than ever before!
