Recent Reads Vol. 12

September 1, 2017

I feel like I've been on a reading rampage, you guys. It's the best kind of rampage if you ask me. I've read five books in the last month and a half that I want to share with you today! This post is kind of perfectly timed with the long weekend. Hopefully you have something planned where you've got lots of time to relax with a good book! I'm headed to Napa today for my bachelorette as previously mentioned. You can follow along on Insta if you'd like. Now, to the books!

The Wicked City. This book takes place both in 1924 and 1998 in New York City. It switches back and forth between the two time periods and follows two women who lived in the same apartment building. As you may have guessed there are some strange connections between the two women that you see unfold throughout the story. I really enjoyed this one but my one grievance was that I liked the 1998 storyline better but the 1924 sections were always twice as long. Would I recommend: definitely!

Romancing the Throne. Total guilty pleasure book right here. I love the royals and this is basically fan fiction about them. It's very very loosely based on Prince William and the royal family but takes place when he's in high school, which isn't something you normally read about. It's pretty trashy and kind of predictable but I lapped it up. If you liked The Royal We you'll definitely like this one. Would I recommend: yep! Great beach read right here.

Who Thought This Was a Good Idea? Omg you guys this book was so great. It's written by Alyssa Mastromonaco who is a former Deputy Chief of Staff for Obama. She was with him when he was a senator and helped get him elected so she's got lots of great anecdotes and advice. The reason she wrote the book was because when she was getting started in politics and looking for female role models who had written books she wasn't able to find any. I love that. Her writing is excellent and she's pretty hilarious too. Would I recommend? Yes, this should be your next read!

Fool Me Once. I'm not really sure where I heard about this book but was surprised by how much I liked it. I have a running list of books to read (currently 88 books long) and usually have a few I'm on the list for at the library. A few weeks ago I finished Who Thought This Was a Good Idea and none of the other books I'd requested were ready so I looked back at books at the top of the list (the oldest on there) and started trying to find ones that were available immediately. This was the first one I could borrow so I gave it a shot without really remembering why it was on the list. All this to say that I really liked it even though I didn't remember what it's about! So let me tell you: it's about Maya, an ex-army pilot, whose husband has just died but then she sees him on the nanny cam. There were several plot twists and I was surprised by the ending so that's a plus. Would I recommend: yes. This was a pretty great mystery/thriller.

Rich People Problems. This is the third installment in the Crazy Rich Asians series and it did not disappoint. If you haven't already read the first two, what are you even doing with your life?! Kidding, but really they're so good and they're making a movie out of the first one soon. The series is about this society of insanely wealthy Chinese families living in Singapore. Their lives are outrageous and dramatic and the author just really nails it. Would I recommend: definitely! Start at the beginning and then devour them all.

I also want to mention that I started Girl Through Glass but just couldn't get into it. I got about 1/4 of the way through and was so bored that I decided not to finish it which happens so rarely!

Next up for me is Snobs by Julian Fellowes (the Downton Abbey guy)! What are you reading now? Would love your recs! If you're looking for more book reviews you can see past Recent Reads posts here
