Chills

December 11, 2013

My mother is pretty much the most wonderful person in the world and I hope more than anything that I can be half as loving and caring as she is. She does have one weakness though, she is notorious for tearing up for reasons ranging from a beautiful song to a baptism at church. My sister and I have incessantly made fun of her for this over the years, and now I'm paying for it. That's right, the very trait that I mocked, I have now inherited.  I can tear up at a moment's notice.

Some things that have recently made me want to cry: 1. singing a South African song with an entire concert hall in honor of Nelson Mandela, 2. a particularly beautiful rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner" at a volleyball game, 3. Josh Groban's "O Holy Night."

As you can see, the common theme is music. Music, more than anything, has the ability to give me chills and bring me to tears. Does this happen to anyone else? There are certain lines from ballads that are so relatable or heart-wrenching that if you can't appreciate them, then you must be a monster. Here are some of my absolute favorite women (and one man) killing it and making me want to cry:

1. Barbra Streisand singing "My Man" at the end of Funny Girl.

When she says, "What's the difference if I say, 'I'll go away,' when I know I'll come back on my knees some day." So. Heartbreaking. (Also, when she says, "The feeling deep in your soul, that you were half, now you're whole," in "People" is so beautiful.)

2. Judy Garland singing "Old Man River."

This woman was so fabulous, she can hold a consonant longer than anyone. The line "I'm tired of living, but scared of dying" gives me chills without fail.

3. Lauryn Hill and Tanya Blount singing "His Eye is on the Sparrow" in Sister Act. (I couldn't find the clip from the movie)

I can't even. They're so talented. (On a related note I also love "Joyful, Joyful" and "Oh Happy Day.")

4. Michael Bublé's "Hold On."

There are so many lyrics from this song that I absolutely love, so I won't list them all out, but I die at the end with all of that dramatic build up.

5. Whitney Houston singing "I Will Always Love You."

I think we can all agree that this just might be the most magical/moving/powerful song ever.

Do you have any songs/instances that will without fail make you choke up?

  1. I know! I do things all the time and then think, I am my mother. Not a bad thing though!
