New Wellness Routine + Healthy(ish) Recipes to Try

May 19, 2017

As I'm sure you're very aware of I am getting married in 5 short months (!!!) and like so many brides I want to look and feel my absolute best. If you're a long time reader then you know this is no fitness or health and wellness blog. I do not like exercising I really really love donuts, pizza and wine. I am a firm believer in treating oneself. So. How do I reckon those two things?

I knew I didn't want to do any sort of crazy wedding dieting because that's not me and it would never work for me because like I said I love indulgences. Cutting things out completely wasn't an option. One night Mark and I were talking about how to be healthier and calorie counting came up. I was hesitant because I had a lot of preconceived notions about having to starve yourself or becoming obsessive. Now that's not to say I'm gung-ho about it now or that it will be a permanent thing but I'm actually really happy with where we're at.

We both decided to download calorie counting apps and set some goals for ourselves with October 21st in mind. We wanted to be realistic so it's nothing insane like lose 30 pounds in 6 months. It was pretty hard and somewhat of a rude awakening at first (you don't even want to know how many calories are in a red velvet cupcake from Sprinkles) but after doing it for about a month I've got my routine down. I still have a very healthy allotted amount of calories per day but it's probably 200-300 less than what I was eating before. I am not at all cutting out my beloved indulgences but I am for sure indulging in less when I do. This endeavor has also helped me really plan for when I do want to have a pizza night or some wine with my dinner. If it's pizza night then I'm having salad for lunch :) I definitely don't stick to it 100% and there are cheat days but it's just made me overall more aware of the choices I'm making about food and exercise.

Anyway, I don't want to bore you or sound preachy but I'm actually really proud of myself for sticking with it so far. I am definitely not known for being disciplined! I can't say with certainty if it's had any any tangible results because we don't have a scale and I don't plan to buy one (don't worry, you won't be seeing any #TransformationTuesday posts from me). I just feel really good that I'm actually being proactive and I don't want to obsess about losing or gaining every day. I've felt meh about my wellness for a couple years so it feels really good to finally take some action.

As far as fitness goes I'm still doing three workouts a week (volleyball, barre, and then usually weightlifting) but we've really upped our overall activity with everyday walks with the dog and bike riding for Mark. Louie is definitely benefitting from our new lifestyle! On the food front we're still doing Hello Fresh and are pretty happy with it. But for the four days a week when our food isn't preplanned I always struggle with what to make. Here are a couple recipes I've bookmarked lately and have even tried making some of them. They're all supposedly healthy but still look pretty good!

That's a lot of desserts isn't it? :) Guess you can still see where my priorities lie! If you want to see what I'm cooking you can always check out my Pinterest page!

Hope you have a wonderful weekend, friends!
