Movie and TV Shows I've Loved

January 22, 2018

By now you’ve probably realized that I’m very into movies and TV shows. After a long day of waking up early, going to work, walking the dog, making dinner, etc. all I want to do is relax and watch something to unwind. Thank god Netflix came around and made it more acceptable to just sit around watching TV and movies all day, right? ;) One of my favorite questions to ask people is what they’ve been watching lately so I can get recommendations and also because I love sharing recommendations. We recently signed up for Movie Pass, which I talked about on Instagram. It’s pretty much the best and has allowed us to see tons of movies. You can see one movie a day in theaters for $9.99 a month. It’s not a perfect system but we’ve been loving it and taking full advantage. Here are some movies and shows we’ve been devouring.

1. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. I hadn’t even heard of this show until the Golden Globes but boy am I glad I did! Last weekend Mark and I watched all eight episodes in one day. Oops. It’s that good! It’s set in 1950’s New York and the main character, Mrs. Maisel, is a housewife who realizes she’s pretty great at standup comedy. She goes on to try and make it as a comedian and it's hilarious. The acting, costumes and music are all spot on. It’s just such a feel good show.

2. Jumanji. We saw this over the weekend and I liked it way more than I thought I would. I don’t really remember the original because I was pretty young when I saw it. All I remember is being terrified by it! Suffice it to say I liked the new one much better as an adult. I thought it was super funny and they put an interesting enough spin on it to differentiate it from the original.

3. Shameless. This isn’t a new show but we’ve just been catching up on the most recent season and we’re remembering how much we love this show. If you haven’t heard of it, it follows the Gallagher family who live in Chicago and pretty much have done anything and everything to get by. The hijinks that ensue are quite entertaining.

4. The Post. This was the movie this awards season that I was most excited about and it didn’t disappoint. It’s a true story based on Katharine Graham’s life. She inherited the Washington Post in the ‘70’s and had a tough time getting respect as a woman. Then the paper is faced with whether to publish the Pentagon Papers or not and she has to make the tough call. I had so many emotions during this movie but just felt so proud at the end.

5. Molly’s Game. I didn’t know much about this movie going in but I ended up loving it. Mark did too. It’s also a true story about a former Olympic skier who then went on to run one of the most exclusive high-stakes poker games. It’s such a fascinating story!

6. Brooklyn Nine-Nine. I already talked about this show recently but it’s just that good that I had to share. It was always one I knew was around and that people liked but I kind of forgot about it. If you’re not familiar, it’s a comedy set in the 99th precinct of the NYPD. The characters are all so well developed and their interactions are hilarious. We’re all caught up now and we’ve been having nine-nine withdrawals!

7. Victoria and Abdul. I can’t get enough of the royals right now what with having just
finished season two of The Crown and Harry and Meghan’s wedding coming up. So this movie about Queen Victoria came at just the right time for me. It’s the true story of an unlikely friendship between the lonely queen and an Indian man who came to England to work for her. They become friends and pretty much everyone is against it and tries to interfere. It was such an interesting story and made me want to know more about Victoria!

Have you been watching anything good lately? Do share!
